Phd structure

In agreement with their supervisors and co-supervisors, PhD students can flexibly plan their training and research activities, choosing those best suited to their needs and goals.

The programme includes the following activities:

• Research
• Disciplinary and multidisciplinary training:
  this is training on specific topics related to the research project, also in relation to aspects of relevant scientific and technological achievements, but also to more general topics (multidisciplinary, transdisciplinary and interdisciplinary), aimed at filling the training gaps of interest for all the scientific domains included in the PhD programme and/or in its Curricula;
• Acquisition of transferable skills:
  research valorisation (e.g. technology transfer, entrepreneurship, innovation management, etc.); methods, techniques and tools for research management (e.g. bibliographic sources, data management, publishing policies and practices, open science, etc.); dissemination and communication of research activity (e.g. skills for writing articles and giving scientific presentations, written/oral/visual communication techniques, advanced study of foreign languages, etc.); impact of scientific research on society and sustainable development; knowledge of European and international research systems, with their mechanisms for access to competitive funding; job orientation and career planning; training in teaching; basic principles of ethics, gender equality and integrity; etc.
  
• Extra-curricular training:
  this guarantees and stimulates the growth of doctoral students as members of a scientific community, e.g. through participation in national and international training schools (summer schools, winter schools, etc.), or formative moments of exchange/presentation of research results (PhD symposia, etc.)
  
• Dissemination of research results:
  this refers to the participation of PhD students in congresses, conferences, workshops, etc. as speakers or poster presenters;
  
• Teaching and tutoring activities:
  the PhD course may allow and encourage the participation of PhD students in supplementary teaching and tutoring activities within the limits of consistency and compatibility with the research activities carried out.

High-Level Courses in English with an International Focus

STVA offers a rich and varied range of training and teaching activities in English as an integral part of the training path of doctoral students.

Every year the Teaching Board organizes courses and workshops of high scientific value held by teachers from the University of Bologna or other universities, to enrich the students' educational path through an interdisciplinary approach.

All courses organized by STVA are specifically addressed to STVA doctoral students, but this does not exclude the participation of doctoral students from other doctoral programs of the University of Bologna and other universities, as well as interested students from other training courses. 

The improvement of students' English language proficiency (verified during the evaluation interview of the candidates for the doctoral scholarships announced each cycle) is constantly encouraged through international seminars, workshops, and conferences in which students are encouraged to participate.

Doctoral credits

Doctoral credits (DCs) represent a measure of the workload required to complete the training and research activities in the PhD programme. Each year, you must earn (number to be inserted) DCs, with each DC corresponding to (number to be inserted) hours of work. 

The PhD programme requires the acquisition of a total of 180 DCs, divided as follows: 

• Research activities: they represent 80% of the total workload required and the acquisition of  144 DCs
• Research and teaching training activities: they represent 20%  of the workload required and the acquisition of 36 DCs
