According to Anglo-Saxon terminology, the Ph.D. program allows one to obtain the title of Ph.D. or Philosophy Doctor (Ph.D.). It is the highest level of education obtainable, which, in addition to being necessary to pursue an academic career, is increasingly in demand for senior roles in industry.

The PhD in Computer Science and Engineering is a three-year program that offers a broad-based preparation that considers both scientific and engineering aspects with respect to a large spectrum of research topics.

Learning outcomes and research areas

The Course is aimed at training individuals capable of carrying out research activities independently, both in academia and industry, and managerial activities. In this sense, each doctoral student in the doctoral course is expected to produce original, relevant and significant results, either in the form of scientific publications or the production of software or innovative applications, in one or more' of the following areas:

  • Distributed systems and distributed algorithms
  • Programming languages and systems
  • Computer networks and applications
  • Software methodologies and engineering
  • Formal methods and semantics of programming languages
  • Artificial intelligence
  • Real-time and fault-tolerant systems
  • Parallel algorithms and probabilistic algorithms.
  • Image processing
  • Bioinformatics and biometric systems
  • Information systems and databases
  • Competition theory
  • Security
  • Logical foundations of computer science
  • Multimedia systems

By the end of the programme, PhD graduates will have developed a solid knowledge of the state of the art in their area of research, but not only. They will also be able to engage with other researchers on related topics, participate in innovative international projects and recognise the potential practical and technological impact of their work. In addition, they will be able to contribute to teaching in universities and provide specific competence in learning programmes.

Employment opportunities and sectors

The programme provides advanced theoretical and practical training, along with the ability to tackle and solve complex problems. This makes it an ideal training programme for developing highly qualified, versatile professionals capable of working in academic, industrial, public and entrepreneurial settings.
