PhD Extension

The PhD extension provides either a programme duration extension or a thesis deadline deferral, with or without funding

Types of Extension

Overview

According to Art. 19 of the PhD Regulations, there are two types of extension: a funded extension of the PhD programme duration (Art. 19, para. 9) and an unfunded extension of the thesis submission deadline (Art. 19, para. 10).

Funded Extension of the PhD Programme Duration (Art. 19, para. 9)

The PhD Board, upon request of the supervisor and with the consent of the PhD student, may grant an extension of the overall duration of the PhD programme for justified scientific reasons.

In this case:

  • the duration of the scholarship is extended accordingly.
  • financial coverage is guaranteed by the Department and/or external funding bodies.

Unfunded Extension of the Thesis Submission Deadline (Art. 19, para. 10)

Alternatively, upon request of the PhD student, the PhD Board may grant an extension for the submission of the PhD thesis.

This extension:

  • does not extend the PhD duration, but only postpones thesis submission to a later final session.
  • does not include any financial support.

How to Request an Extension

Who Submits and Receives the Request

Requests for PhD extensions must be sent by email to .

  • For funded extensions of the PhD programme duration (Art. 19, para. 9), the request is submitted by the supervisor, with the PhD student in CC.
  • For unfunded extensions of the thesis submission deadline (Art. 19, para. 10), yhe request is submitted by the PhD student, with the supervisor in CC.

Content of the Request Email

The email must contain:

  • a brief description of the scientific reasons supporting the request.

Additional Steps for Funded Extensions

The supervisor must contact to arrange the funding.

The funding must be approved by the Department Board before the extension period begins.
