Duration: 24 hours in November/December. The first 4 lectures will be on Wed 16, Thu 17, Wed 23 and Thu 24 November, 16:00-18:00, in Aula C (ground floor of Via Irnerio 46). Then starting from Mon 28 November: Mon 13:00-15:00 Aula C, Tue 10:00-12:00 IR-2A (second floor of Via Irnerio 46).
Abstract:
At the end of the course the student will acquire a deep understanding of the open questions beyond the Standard Model and of the connection between particle physics and cosmology. The course will provide a theoretical and phenomenological overview of the topics and will be complemented by focussed seminars on specific advanced topics.
Prerequisites: A basic knowledge of the Standard Model of particle physics and of QFT is required
Content:
- Recap of the SM and overview of the open questions
- The hierarchy problem and its solutions
- The Strong CP problem and the axion
- Recap of cosmology and thermal history of the Universe
- Neutrino oscillations and models of neutrino masses
- The baryon asymmetry
- High energy cosmic rays
- Gravitational waves
The course will be complemented by topical seminars (of 1 or 2 hours) on:
the CMB, inflation, phase transitions, leptogenesis, EFTs, Finite T QFT, the flavour problem. The seminars will take place in the first and second semester and be given by experts in the field.
