Luminosity and Forward Physics

Lecturers: B. Giacobbe (INFN Researcher) and P. Grafstrom (CERN)

Duration: 12 hours in June

Programme

The course is focused on three main subjects: introduction to accelerator physics with particular emphasis on the LHC collider; aspects of Forward Physics such as  elastic and total proton-proton cross section and diffractive physics; concepts of luminosity in a collider and the measurement of luminosity in ATLAS. The classes will be held by Prof. Per Grafstrom for the first two items and Doct. Benedetto Giacobbe for the luminosity measurement. The goal of the course is to provide students with a panorama on crucial, although less explored, aspects of the  physics program of the LHC experiments.
