Silicon detectors for tracking, timing and photon detection applications

Lecturer: F. Carnesecchi (CERN)

Duration: 12 hours in March

Programme: The course will be focused on state-of-the-art silicon detector techniques. In particular, the course content will involve

  • Introduction to basic silicon detector concepts (wtith simulated results)
  • Challenges of silicon detectors which aim at cutting edge spatial or timing resolutions
  • Problematics of a precise tracking reconstruction, in particular of primary or secondary vertices, and of a precise determination of the time of arrival of a particle
  • Difficulties behind photon detections with silicon detectors
  • Recent silicon detector technologies: monolithic silicon detectors, like CMOS MAPS, and silicon detectors with gain, like SiPM or UFSD (LGAD)
  • Future applications in the field of particle physics
