Admission procedures and opportunities for those wishing to enrol in the PhD programme
PhDs represent the most advanced level of university education.
Joining a PhD programme means undertaking advanced training and research in your field of study. Admission to the programmes is through a public selection process held annually. All information on requirements, application procedures and deadlines is included in the Call for applications published annually.
Depending on your citizenship or country of residence - whether you are an Italian, EU or non-EU citizen, or living outside Italy - different application procedures and requirements may apply.
In all cases, keep these key aspects in mind before starting the procedure:
The programme includes a selection procedure by means of a call for applications, which is detailed in the PhD programme-specific sheet.
Knowledge of the English language will be tested during the entrance exam.
If you have a foreign degree, prepare the necessary documentation in good time.
If you come from another city or country, consider finding accommodation in advance.
Several funded positions are available, along with additional funding opportunities open to both Italian and international applicants.
University of Bologna scholarships
Each year, you will find the number of positions and the related scholarships funded by the University in the PhD programme information sheet. These scholarships are generally open-topic and awarded based on merit ranking.
Scholarships funded by external bodies and companies
External bodies and companies may choose to fund scholarships for specific research projects, determining the field of interest and participating in the selection of applicants.
Scholarships for international applicants
The scholarships indicated in the PhD programme information sheet are open to all international applicants. Any reserved positions are specified annually in the information sheet. Furthermore, if you do not have Italian citizenship or reside abroad, you can access additional funding opportunities to support your PhD.
How to register and details of the exam procedure.
All up-to-date information on procedures, selection methods and evaluation criteria is published each year in the call for applications and in the PhD programme information sheet.
How to submit your application
You can submit your application before the deadline and check the status of your application afterwards by logging in to Online Students with your @studio.unibo.it credentials.
