Abstract

Nowadays, there is an increasing interest towards multiphase motor drives, especially for medium and high power applications such as naval and railway propulsion systems.

The use of multiphase inverters together with multiphase ac machines has been recognized as a viable approach to obtain high power ratings without increasing the stator current per phase, making it possible to use standard power switches based on a single device.

Furthermore, multiphase motor drives have several advantages over traditional three-phase motor drives, such as reducing the amplitude and increasing the frequency of torque pulsations, and improving the reliability and fault tolerance. In addition, multiphase motor drives offer a greater number of degrees of freedom compared with three-phase motor drives, which can be utilized for improving the drive performance.

This seminar will cover the following topics.

  1. Multiple space vector representation of multiphase systems.
  2. Case study for five-phase systems.
  3. Mathematical model of five-phase induction machines.
  4. Exploitation of multiphase machines for improving the torque density.
  5. Exploitation of multiphase machines for multi-motor drives.
  6. Modulation techniques for multiphase inverters.

CREDITS

For the PhD students, the credits of the Course will be validated after a simple written examination.

The text of the written test will be assigned to the students at the end of the Course.

The completed test has to be returned to Angelo Tani within the end of september for the validation.
