The study of language and modern languages, with different approaches, in their intertwining with socio-cultural issues relevant to the annual theme of the PhD cycle.
The approaches encompassed by the curriculum are various, ranging from pragmatics to translation and translatology, from didactics to language pedagogy. The range of approaches is broad, and includes: sociolinguistics, pragmatics, discourse analysis, conversation analysis, interactional linguistics, linguistic anthropology, applied linguistics, language acquisition, digital humanities.
The overall objective of this curriculum is to train you in at least two languages, with different theories and analytical methods. You will be able to confront situations of linguistic and cultural diversity, tackling the main challenges posed by multicultural, intercultural, and multilingual societies. Each year, the LINGMOD curriculum addresses a different theme, in synergy with the other three curricula of the PhD programme. These themes are investigated with the most advanced research methods and tools. The curriculum prioritizes the study of language in context, with a particular focus on the relationship between language and sociocultural issues relevant to the transversal theme.
During the oral examination, you will be assessed on your proficiency in two of the following languages of your choice: Arabic, Chinese, Dutch, English, French, German, Japanese, Persian, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish. In addition, knowledge of Italian is a mandatory prerequisite.
You will spend a research period abroad of 6 months: you will have a wide choice of international universities.
