Labs

The Doctoral Sociology and Social Research program has a computer Lab containing about fourteen PCs and data analysis programs specific to the social sciences (supported by two technicians, one of whom is a graduate). The Lab can accommodate 14 workstations for a maximum capacity of 15 people, who can stay in the rooms according to the safety regulations dictated by the relevant offices of the University. The Lab is also equipped with a flatbed scanner and a Laser printer that can be used upon request. In addition to the computer lab, the program also provides doctoral students with the visual sociology laboratory of the Department of Sociology; and two equipped classrooms (Pc, data display, video/audio system) for seminars and workshops.

 

Libraries

Doctoral students also have access to the specialized library of the Department of Sociology and Economic Law, managed by a Scientific and a Technical Manager. Collections are continuously updated and currently stand at more than 35,000 books. There are 48 seats and five terminals for online bibliographic research.

The specialized newspaper library of the Department of Sociology and Economic Law is constantly updated on all fields of doctoral research, which doctoral students can access with "facilitated" accreditation. Currently holds 331 Periodicals in ACNP, of which 162 are active; provides Document delivery service.

 

Databases

Doctoral students can also participate in the Laboratories of the Graduate Program in Sociology in the School of Political and Social Sciences, where the use of Databases and the use of the STATA statistical analysis system are taught:

Computer Facilities

All computer lab equipment is equipped with Windows XP operating system (to be replaced soon), antivirus, Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2007 (consisting of Word, Excel, Power Point, Access, Outlook); MS Office, MS Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, VLC, as essential software equipment. In addition, all the machines in the Lab have been equipped with specific software for social research: SPSS, NVIVO, and other opensource software such as PSPP, Node XL, Quantum GIS, ARC GIS 9 Node XL (tool to analyze, visualize, and import data and information from different Social Network Sites into Excel), Final Cut Pro (software for video editing and montage), are available to users.

All PhD Students are provided with institutional email addresses.

 

Languages

The Teachers' Board will make use of the collaboration with the University Language Lab CLA to enable doctoral students who need and request it to attend language labs in order to be able to pass the level tests for "international mobility." The possibility of attending language courses organized by CLA that are held in classrooms with multimedia equipment will also be offered.

 

Computer Science

The College of Teachers will use the collaboration of ARIC staff - "Data Management and Application Development Sector" to offer training activities on the analysis of the information needs of the Research Area, the design of software architectures, and the development of applications necessary for the operation of projects/processes under the Area. Training will also be offered concerning the assurance and oversight of research-related data and information.

 

Management of research, knowledge of research systems, and funding systems

The Faculty Board will make use of the collaboration with ARIC - Sector "University Research Support" for training activities on the study, development, and management of organizational management models to support research and the promotion and exploitation of its results.

 

Enhancement of research and intellectual property

Collaborating with ARIC - "Knowledge Transfer Office - KTO Process Unit" will provide training on the promotion, protection, and exploitation of research results, including through the protection of intellectual capital and support for the creation of new businesses (spinoffs).
