Calls and selection procedures

Candidates must pass a selection process to enroll in a doctoral program at the University of Bologna.

SELECTION PROCEDURE

The selection process for candidates follows these steps:

1. Internal call to the BiGeA Department. Every January, the research lines, (also known as bound topics) are proposed by professors and researchers for the geology and biology curricula. These topics are chosen based on internal criteria established by the department and are the lines that will receive funding from the STVA annual budget. Additionally, more scholarships might be financed by external research funds or agreements with external institutions. Importantly, there are no available positions without scholarship support.

2. Publication of the call. The call for bound topics is typically published in March or April and includes all the proposed research lines (those funded by the STVA budget and those externally financed.

3. Candidate application. Candidates can apply by following the instructions in the call and selecting one of the advertised research lines that aligns with their interests, skill, and background.

4. Candidate selection. Candidates are typically selected and ranked sometime between May and July. This process involves assessing their cover letters, qualifications, publications, and the results of an oral interview. The evaluation committee will evaluate each candidate's ability to develop the selected bound topic.

Candidates in possession of at least one of the following qualifications can participate in the selection, without age or citizenship restrictions:

a) Master's degree, single-cycle master's degree or specialist degree;

b) Degree from the previous system (old system);

c) Similar second-level academic qualification issued by institutions belonging to the AFAM sector (Higher Artistic and Musical Education);

d) Similar qualification obtained abroad, recognized as equivalent to the second-level academic qualifications.

Candidates who do not possess the above requirements on the expiry date of this announcement are admitted with reservations. The qualification required for access to the doctorate courses must be obtained no later than 31/10 of the current year.
