Perinatal risk factors need attention (Prof. Anneloes van Baar - Universiteit Utrecht)

  • Date: 26 APRIL 2022  from 17:30 to 19:00

  • Event location: Sala Rossa, Palazzo Marchesini, Via Marsala, 26 - Bologna - In presence and online event

The first 1000 days in a human’s life are crucially important for its later development. This holds for everyone, but especially when perinatal risk factors arise this period is important for prevention and early identification of potential developmental problems. Perinatal risk factors can be distinguished into unconscious exposure to environmental pollution, exposure to medicines needed by the pregnant woman, psychiatric pathology or stress of the pregnant woman, but also exposure to life style habits of thepregnant woman and her partner, like drinking alcohol, using drugs or smoking cigarettes. Prevention of such exposure for the unborn child is needed at a societal level, as well as at a family and individual level. When perinatal risk factors actually have been identified, careful monitoring pregnancy outcomes and later developmental outcomes is important: early identification allows for the assignment of evidence-based interventions in order to optimize child development. Novel attempts to improve early identification of developmental delay, based on knowledge of parents and day care workers, will be presented.
