Fundamentals of Plasma Modeling - Particle-In-Cell techniques for plasma simulations

The course will be held by dott. Arturo Popoli and is part of the training provided for IBES PhD Students (a.y.2023/2024) within the Electrical Engineering (EE) curriculum.

  • Date:

    05 MARCH
    08 MARCH 2024
     from 14:30 to 18:00
  • Event location: Auletta DEI - Department of Electrical, Electronic, and Information Engineering "Guglielmo Marconi" DEI - Viale Risorgimento, 2 - Bologna - In presence and online event

  • Type: IBES Course

The course starts with a review of the main physical features of non-thermal plasmas, produced by gas discharges. The main differences between fluid and kinetic approaches for numerical simulations are highlited from the perspective of modelling non-equilibrium phoenomena. The fundamentals of the Particle-In-Cell technique (also widely employed in semiconductor modelling) are presented. Participants are guided in the development of a simple 1D electrostatic collisionless PIC code, to be subsequently extended to include a Monte Carlo Collision module for chemical reactions.

  • 5th March, 2:30pm-6pm
  • 6th March, 2:30pm-6pm
  • 7th March, 3pm-6pm

This course is part of the training provided for IBES PhD Students in the academic year 2023/2024.
