Optimisation via Extremum Seeking

ABSTRACT

This course aims to present classical and recent developments in this celebrated optimisation technique which embeds the concepts of exploration and exploitation in a monolithic policy. First, the course reviews basic Extremum Seeking (ES) schemes by investigating two theoretical tools, i.e., the averaging and the singular perturbations, essential for the proofs of stability. Then, this short course details the last advances in ES, describing challenges and open problems. Finally, a few hours are dedicated to the numerical implementation of the reviewed algorithms.

The course is part of the training provided for IBES PhD Students in the academic year 2022/2023.

The IBES PhD Students who attend the course:

• are eligible for max. 3 credits if they are enrolled in cycle 36 or 37 and email a brief report about the course to dei-phd-ibes@unibo.it;
• gain 9 attendance hours of the IBES training for the Automatic Control and Operational Research curriculum if they are enrolled in cycle 38.
