ABSTRACT:

This short course will focus on the theory and application of Functional data analysis, which lots of us like to call "FDA". FDA is about the analysis of information on curves or functions. For an example of fda see Jim Ramsay's webpage.  I will focus on the methodological aspects of FDA and examples of data analysis with FDA. Topics will include visualization and data exploration, nonparametric smoothing, functional linear models and functional principal components analysis. We will have practical sessions in R to complement our methodological learning. Your are expected to bring your own laptop in the lectures sessions.

The two books that we will follow are:

  • Ramsay and Silverman, 2005, Functional Data Analysis, Springer. (Free access through UoG library)
  • Chapters from Ramsay, Graves and Hooker,(2009) Functional Data Analysis in R . (Free access through UoG library)
