ABSTRACT
Radioastronomy is the branch of astronomy concerned with radio emissions from celestial objects. Indeed, large single dish antennas and/or antenna arrays designed for radiastronomic applications must typically receive sky signals ranging from tens of MHz to tens of GHz.
Despite this, optical technologies are heavily utilized within radioastronomic facilities, both for applications related to the reception of the celestial signals, and for those related to the monitoring of the operation parameters of the global systems.
The course will describe some of these applications with particular reference to those related to the Square Kilometre Array and to the Very Long Baseline Interferometry Projects, where a strong collaboration between DEI and INAF is on – going since more than 10 years ago.
Through the course it will be possible to appreciate that the same attractive features which make optical fiber systems to be the backbone of the telecommunications network, make the same systems to be highly appropriate in radioastronomic scenarios.
At the same time, some particular results will be evidenced, which could be obtained only within these investigations, due to possible peculiar operating conditions that have to be included in this context.
