ABSTRACT

Mobility is going through a new era thanks to increasing levels of connectivity and automation, which are unquestionably needed to approach the vision of zero deaths on the road in 2050. In this scenario, a key role will be played by vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communications, meaning both cellular and direct connectivity.

Focusing on safety-related applications, the lecture will analyse V2X with special emphasis on direct communications, addressing both functional aspects and the enabling wireless access technologies.

With regard to the functional aspects, we will go through what are called Day-1, Day-2, and Day-3 applications with the information exchanges defined or under discussion in ETSI. As far as the wireless technologies are concerned, an overview of both IEEE WiFi-based and 3GPP cellular sidelink solutions will be provided, including insights based on results of the latest research activities.

Finally, an overview of the current status of implementations and some of the main research trends in this field will be provided.
