First year students have to attend the training and research classes indicated by PhD Council, whose description is available here. At the end of each class they receive a grading according to their work during the class. Students can substitute a proposed class with another class of doctoral levelif they receive a favourable opinion by the PhD Council.
Students should also take the series of seminars entitled "Topics in Mathematics", where some active research topics developed by department members, or which are considered of interest for the students training, are presented;
in November, first year students have to prepare the annual report on their activities and give a short oral presentation (in English) about their plan of research;
within the February of their second year they have to choose a thesis advisor and a thesis-problem.

in November, third year students have to prepare the annual report on their activities and give a short oral presentation (in English) on their ongoing research;
in the subsequent February, they have to give a presentation of their PhD thesis in front of the PhD Council, and have to have prepared a summary of their work (sunto), to be sent to the Editors of the Italian Mathematical Union (U.M.I.) according to the instructions to be found at the web page http://umi.dm.unibo.it/italiano/Editoria/bumia/tesi.html
During the three years of the PhD school students must stay abroad for at least three months, including research stays, conferences and research schools.
