How can I apply for the PhD program?

Admission to the PhD program is through a selection process that assigns scholarships funded by the Italian Government. Available positions are limited, and each university establishes different selection methods and timelines.

The University of Bologna generally publishes its call for applications in the spring. You can find the call starting from the following page:

For specific requirements, you can refer to the previous year's call:

What are the obligations of a PhD student?

Before applying, it is important to note that:

  • The PhD program requires full-time commitment, and other work activities are not allowed, except for short-term and occasional ones, subject to prior approval by the Teaching Board.
  • There are no positions without a scholarship, nor is it possible to self-finance your studies without other certified forms of financial support (e.g., equivalent government scholarships for international students or salaries for Italian public employees on three-year leave).
  • PhD students must spend a minimum total of 6 months abroad for training and/or research during the three years.
  • During the program, students must earn credits through lectures, conferences, publications, and other academic activities, as outlined in the PhD Credit Table.
  • The main language used in the Arts, History, Society PhD program is Italian, although the final dissertation can be written in another language approved by the Teaching Board.
