Geographic disaggregated data

ARCGis programming

Course contents
The course presents recent research that uses geographic data, highlighting the advantages of having (i) disaggregated and (ii) geolocalized data. In parallel, the course goes through the technicalities related to the construction and use of geographic data using ESRI’s ArcGIS software.

Prerequisites
No specific knowledge of programming and computer science is required. Some basic skills in data managing (Excel, Stata) are recommended. Before starting the course students are required to have ArcGIS installed on their laptop.

Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, students should know how to build and manage georeferenced data, using all the basic tools and some of the more advanced ones of ArcGIS, and they should have a sense of how feasible/difficult is translating their research ideas into the data, and the data structure, they need.

Teaching method
Participants are required to have their own PC (or at least one every two people) to follow and replicate the work done by the instructor.

Assessment method
Students will be assessed based on their in-class participation (30% of the mark) and on a final exam. The final exam (70% of the mark) is a take-home consisting in the development of a research project, with special focus on the construction of the data and its economic meaning.
