SHM LAB - Lab of Structural Health Monitoring

This is one of the Labs of the "Ercole De Castro" interdisciplinary research center (ARCES) which also hosts the Joint Research Lab with STMicroelectronics.

The SHM Lab is equipped with prototype structures, data acquisition systems, and structure modeling & simulation platforms. Examples of structures available in the LAB  include wings and plates in aluminum and composite material, as well as physical models of spaceframe structures (e.g. 80 struts).

The Lab is designed to support research along the entire SHM value chain. It offers tools to design and test sensors and transducers for the measurement of physical quantities in several frequency ranges (displacement, inclination, temperature, acceleration, strain, etc.) and to configure and deploy wired and wireless sensor networks. It also offers facilities for data analytics, data driven model design and verification.

The SHM Lab is located in the Blu Hall of ARCES-STAR Lab and it is part of a very creative environment, in fact the same building hosts other advanced UNIBO labs as well as business incubators and accelerators. This facilitates  access to and cross-fertilization with state-of-the-art technologies and innovation experts.

LAMC LAB - Lab of Computational Mechanics

LAMC supports research and education in the area of Computational Mechanics and fosters advances in the development and application of numerical methods and computational techniques for the solution of engineering problems.

LAMC hosts basic and applied research activities in the area of computational mechanics. The activity encompasses the development and application of theoretical models, numerical methods and computational techniques for the solution of engineering problems. The current research lines address a wide range of engineering issues, including solid and structural mechanics, heat and mass transfer, smart and innovative materials, damage and fracture, historical monumental heritage.  LAMC participates actively in research projects and contracts, in collaboration with other research groups, public institutions and partners from industry.

ARES LAB - Lab of sensor modeling and characterization

This is a characterization laboratory for environmental and electrical measurements on devices and ICs, from DC up to 20 or more GHz.

The Lab is equipped with an environmental chamber and with state-of-the-art high-frequency measurement instrumentation, including Cascade Microtech’s RF probes and probe station, an Agilent 16702B Logic State Analyzer, and a semiconductor parametric analyzer with the high-power extension. A Veeco optical profilometer supports precise surface topography analysis with sub-nanometer vertical resolution for applications on MEMS directly on-wafer.

LYRAS LAB - Lab of analog circuits and sensor interfaces

This is the SHM Lab at the Cesena district of the University of Bologna.

It is hosted by the ARCES Lyras LAB, dedicated to ultra-low power and autonomous sensor research. One of the main topics is related to multivariate-boosted impedance spectroscopy performed on electrical and microwave excitation with application to structural and environmental monitoring. The laboratory holds CAD licenses and facilities for microelectronic design and instrumentation for sensor verification and characterization.

MARS LAB - Lab of IoT, Web of Things and Interoperabiity of Embedded Systems.

The laboratory consists of a large open space with over 40 fully networked multimedia workstations. It is equipped with software tools and networking for the research activities on computer vision and wireless communication.

It hosts the ARCES Web of Thinghs research group. The Web of Things is a project started by the W3C (World Wide Web Consortium) to face the fragmentation of the Internet of Things (IoT) world. The project envisions a world where connected things are accessible through the standard and well-known protocols adopted in the Web. This ambitious projects initiative is supported by many international research centers and enterprises like Intel, Siemens, Huawei, Ericsson and Fujitsu just to name a few.
