On 27-28 January 2025, the city of Dar-Es-Salaam hosted the Mission 300 Africa Energy Summit, promoted by the World Bank and the African Development Bank. The summit brought together African heads of states, business leaders and development partners with the aim of committing to “ambitious reforms and actions to expand access to reliable, affordable, and sustainable electricity to 300 million people in Africa by 2030” through on-grid and off-grid solutions. With almost 600 million Africans lacking power access (out of a total population of 1.5 2 billion people), the electrification of the continent is one of the challenges of this new century, played at a time of increasing concern for climate change. Historians, geographers as much as socio-cultural anthropologists and political analysts have begun to consider the macro and micro processes surrounding electricity infrastructure, provision and reform since colonial times. Electricity has turned into a gateway to discuss a variety of crucial issues that range from the recolonization of Africa on the power grid to the micro-dynamics of electric consumption in African daily life.
