Il seminario ripercorre cinquant’anni di ricerca storica, soprattutto, ma non esclusivamente, sugli Stati Uniti nel Novecento. Questo percorso è visto sullo sfondo delle trasformazioni intervenute in questo lungo periodo nella professione storica, in particolare riguardo al dialogo che essa in misura crescente ha ingaggiato con le scienze sociali. Sono entrato nella bottega storiografica come storico del lavoro attraverso lo studio dei “wobblies”, cioè gli Industrial Workers of the World, il sindacato industriale rivoluzionario Usa del primo Novecento. Come sono finito a studiare oggi i Beatles? Il seminario affronta la questione, cercandone le radici culturali, strutturali e istituzionali, e i fili, nuovi e vecchi, di metodi, temi e fonti, che sono sottesi a questo lungo percorso. Contemporaneamente il seminario getta luce sulle sfide e sulle opportunità che muoversi attraverso discipline e temi diversi comporta.

The seminar charts fifty years of historical research, mostly, but not exclusively, in U.S. 20th-century history. This is placed against the backdrop of the main transformations that the historical profession underwent in this long time span, first and foremost through its increasing conversation with social sciences. My point of entry into the historical crafts was as a labor historian dealing with the “wobblies,” i. e. the Industrial Workers of the World, the early 20th century U.S. revolutionary industrial unionism. How did I end up today researching the Beatles? The seminar addresses this question by tracing its cultural, structural, and institutional roots, as well as the underlying novel and recurrent threads in methods, issues, and sources. In the process, it sheds light on the challenges and opportunities that moving across different sub-fields and topics entails.
