Migration Information Campaigns: Qualitative research design and data analysis strategies
18/5/2026, 10.00-13.00, Aula 20 TH
Migration information campaigns are communication strategies that use advertisements, community engagement, and interpersonal interventions to influence migrants and prospective migrants. Unlike border control policies that harden physical infrastructures to restrict mobility, migration information campaigns rely on print and digital advertising, as well as in-person engagement, to shape how irregular migration is understood by target audiences. Their ultimate goal is to influence migration aspirations and decisions by attracting desired migrants and deterring unwanted ones. In this seminar, Dr. Josh Watkins will provide an overview of his scholarship on migration information campaigns, including the research design and data analysis techniques he has used to study them. As part of the session, he will share insights into his use of qualitative content analysis and discourse analysis to examine visual and textual data.
