The course will present advanced materials and technologies for the design and construction of structures, such as chassis, suspensions, engine components, joints, ..., for the Automotive sector, with a view to functional and structural optimization, or mass/performance ratio. The course will be divided into modules covering the topics of design with laminated composite materials and additive manufacturing.

The course is for PhD students of Curriculum 1

MODULES:

1) INTRODUCTION TO COMPOSITE MATERIALS AND ADHESIVE BONDING (Prof. Pirondi, Prof. Moroni)

  1. Introduction to laminated polymer matrix composite materials and related production technologies
  2. Main design criteria
  3. Introduction to structural bonding
  4. Technological aspects related to bonding
  5. Criteria for the design of bonded joints

2) TECHNOLOGICAL AND METALLURGICAL ASPECTS OF ADDITIVE PROCESSES FOR METALLIC MATERIALS (Prof. Liverani, Prof. Lavinia Tonelli)

  1. Introduction to additive processes
  2. Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF): definition of process parameters, influence on the component and main applications
  3. Direct Energy Deposition (DED): definition of process parameters process, influence on the component and main applications
  4. CASE STUDY
  5. Feedstock powder properties
  6. Defects and microstructural features
  7. Post-process heat treatments
  8. Mechanical properties and correlation with microstructural features
  9. Case study: Al-Si-Mg alloy processed by LPBF, heat treatment optimization and mechanical characterization

3) DESIGN OF COMPONENTS MADE WITH ADDITIVE PROCESSES (Prof. Croccolo, Prof. De Agostinis)

  1. Additive manufacturing technological processes
  2. Topological and structural optimization
  3. Fatigue design of components made in additive manufacturing
