Information dedicated to those who are not enrolled in the doctorate to give a complete overview of what is expected for the achievement of the title, final exam and thesis
By October 1st 2019 PhD candidates enrolled at the 32nd cycle PhD Programmes, entered in their last year course in a.y. 2018/2019, and PhD candidates enrolled at the previous cycles, who benefited of a suspension period or entered in their last year course in a.y. 2018/2019 (in case of four year-programmes), following the successful outcome of the last year approved by the Academic Board, have to apply to the final exam.
The final exam application consists in the following steps:
The form and the payment will be available in early September.
Failing to pay the fee and send the application form by October 1st 2019 will result in the exclusion from the PhD course.
The student card has to be returned to the Department where the doctoral activity has been carried out.
PhD candidates enrolled at the 32nd cycle and at the previous cycles fulfilling the conditions mentioned above, who successfully completed their last year course and applied to be admitted to the final exam, have to submit their PhD Thesis by 31/10/2019 at 2 p.m. (local time).
PhD thesis shall be assessed by at least two “external evaluators”, appointed by the Academic Board from among experts holding a position in Institutions that do not contribute in the awarding of the degree. They cannot be members of the Examination Board for the awarding of the PhD degree.

The external evaluators express a written, analytical opinion on the thesis and propose the admission to the thesis defence. They can also propose the deferral of the final defence for a period not exceeding six months.
By February 18th 2020 at 2 p.m. (local time) PhD candidates admitted to the final exam following the positive opinion of the external evaluators, have to carry out the following 4 steps:
Failing to upload the PhD thesis on AMS Tesi di dottorato, by February 18th 2020 at 2 p.m. (local time) will result in the exclusion from the PhD course.
PhD candidates admitted to the final exam, following the positive opinion of the external evaluators, will defend their thesis on the date established by the Academic Board. This must be a date between 16/03/2020 and 15/04/2020.
By 15/06/2020 at 2 p.m. (local time), PhD candidates, whose the final defence has been deferred have to upload a revised copy of the PhD thesis, including integrations/amendments requested by the external evaluators and checked by the Supervisor. The thesis can be drawn up in Italian or English (the prior authorization of the Academic Board is required to drawn up the thesis in languages other than Italian and English). Please, enclose also the abstract of the thesis drawn up in Italian or English and the report on the academic activities carried out during the doctoral path and the list of publications. The latter must be drawn up in Italian or English.
Failing to perform this task by the 15/06/2020 at 2 p.m. (local time) will result in the exclusion from the PhD course.
The external evaluators express a new written, analytical opinion on the PhD thesis, in light of the integrations/amendments included. At this stage, the PhD thesis is admitted to the public defence in any case.
By September 30th 2020 at 2 p.m. (local time) PhD candidates whose the final defence has been deferred have to:
Failing to upload the PhD thesis on AMS Tesi di dottorato, by September 30th 2020 at 2 p.m. (local time) will result in the exclusion from the PhD course.
PhD candidates admitted to the final exam, following the positive opinion of the external evaluators, will defend their thesis on the date established by the Academic Board. This must be a date between 15/10/2020 and 16/11/2020.
