In the framework of the European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018, launched by the European Union, the Department of Architecture of the University of Bologna announces the international conference “The Matter of Future Heritage”, organised by the PhD in Architecture and Design Cultures.

During the last century, the notion of Cultural Heritage has expanded from monuments, to historic centers, to cultural landscapes. Moreover, the intangible dimension of heritage and its social role as expression of collective memories and identities have been recognized. Cultural Heritage is meant as historical legacy, built environment, context of mutual exchanges and relationships, means of social bonds, economic and touristic development. The value of what we have inherited is recognized and well established, but it is not so obvious that it will have the same value in the future. The way we approach and deal with Cultural Heritage today will influence the built environment of the future, hence our legacy towards future generations. Therefore a reflection about the actions that we can undertake today in order to lay the foundation of the heritage of the future, is necessary.

The European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018 represents the occasion to highlight future strategies for Cultural Heritage in Europe and beyond. By the perspective of architecture, technologies, conservation and urban studies, the conference seeks contributions that explore if and how the “hardware” (the built environment) and “software” (cultural, social and economic aspects) of Cultural Heritage do mutually influence each other and our future. What’s the matter for Cultural Heritage research in the future (trends, innovative approaches and practices) and what heritage (assets and process) matters for the future of built environment? The call aims to explore the multiple matters of Future Heritage and the many ways in which Cultural Heritage represents the true basis of our future and especially of our built environment.

The conference aims to build a space of dialogue, critical reflection on experiences, strategic and programmatic debate around the role that research on Cultural Heritage, can have in the near future, with an interdisciplinary angle.

In this scenario, acceptable paper including bibliographical reviews, pilot projects or repertoires of case studies and best-practices, that explore the potential impact and role of Cultural Heritage on future EU Agendas in different fields of research, are welcomed.
