Verification (taḥqīq) was a post-classical practice in Islamic scholarship that sought ways to attain syntheses at the intersection of rational and religious sciences. The Ottoman biobibliographical sources regarding the fifteenth-century scholarship tended to place the verification of theology and philosophy as the central scholarly accomplishment of the time. This lecture will trace the notion of taḥqīq in the early modern Ottoman scholarship with regard to the greater practice of scholarly syntheses in the Mediterranean world with some references to the Italian Renaissance.
