Studying abroad

Characteristics and duration of the planned abroad periods.

Within the legal duration of the PhD program and with prior authorization from the Academic Board, PhD students can spend periods of study and research outside the university structures of the University of Bologna at both national and international universities or research institutes. The overall duration of the external stays, carried out by each doctoral student in the Doctorate in Surgical Sciences, foresees approximately three months, which can be extended to a maximum of eighteen months.

For information regarding the requirements for PhD students (before and after departure) and funding possibilities during their stay abroad, consult the appropriate section of the intranet page dedicated to doctoral students.

30% increase in the scholarship for stays abroad

For PhD students with scholarships it is possible to request an increase in the amount of the scholarship up to 30% for periods of stay abroad.

For more information, consult the University Intranet Portal dedicated to PhD students.

Marco Polo program

The Marco Polo Program aims to provide mobility incentives to promote research carried out abroad by young researchers from the University of Bologna.
Any use of the Marco Polo scholarship is incompatible with the increase in the PhD scholarship (which amounts to 30% of the scholarship itself).

For information on publication dates and evaluation results of the applications, contact the administrative secretariat of your department.

Erasmus + program

PhD students can take advantage of the Erasmus exchange program, which is provided in the bilateral agreement.
The Erasmus contribution consists of 250 euros per month, supplemented by the University with the Youth Fund for internationalization based on the student's ISEE. Access to the Erasmus scholarship is incompatible with the Marco Polo Program but compatible with the increase in the PhD scholarship (which amounts to an additional 30% of the scholarship) for a period defined by the Erasmus exchange.
